چکیده

We present simulations and analysis of the heating of warm dense matter (WDM) foils by ion beams with energy less than 1MeV per nucleon to target temperatures of order 1 eV. Simulations were carried out using the multi-physics radiation hydrodynamics code HYDRA and comparisons are made to an analytical model and the code DPC. We simulate possible targets to be used in a proposed experiment at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (the so-called Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment, NDCX II) for studies of WDM. We compare the dynamics of ideally heated targets under several assumed equations of state and explore target dynamics in the two-phase (fluid–vapor) regime. r 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Ion Beam Heated Target Simulations for Warm Dense Matter Physics and Inertial Fusion Energy

Hydrodynamic simulations have been carried out using the multi-physics radiation hydrodynamics code HYDRA and the simplified one-dimensional hydrodynamics code DISH. We simulate possible targets for a near-term experiment at LBNL (the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment, NDCX) and possible later experiments on a proposed facility (NDCX-II) for studies of warm dense matter and inertial fusi...

Generation of Warm Dense Matter using an Argon based Capillary Discharge Laser

Argon based capillary discharge lasers operating in the extreme ultra violet (EUV) at 46.9 nm output up to 0.5 mJ energy per pulse at up to 10 Hz repetition rates are capable of focussed irradiances of 10 10 W cm−2 and can be used to generate plasma in the warm dense matter regime by irradiating solid material. To model the interaction between such an EUV laser and solid material, the 2D radiat...

Heavy ion fusion science research for high energy density physics and fusion applications*

During the past two years, the U.S. heavy ion fusion science program has made significant experimental and theoretical progress in simultaneous transverse and longitudinal beam compression, ion-beam-driven warm dense matter targets, high brightness beam transport, advanced theory and numerical simulations, and heavy ion target designs for fusion. First experiments combining radial and longitudi...

Current Issues in Finite-T Density-Functional Theory and Warm-Correlated Matter

Finite-temperature density functional theory (DFT) has become of topical interest, partly due to the increasing ability to create novel states of warm-correlated matter (WCM). Warm-dense matter (WDM), ultra-fast matter (UFM), and high-energy density matter (HEDM) may all be regarded as subclasses of WCM. Strong electron-electron, ion-ion and electron-ion correlation effects and partial degenera...

Ionization rate coefficients in warm dense plasmas.

We recast the atomic processes in a warm, dense plasma using Fermi-Dirac statistics and compare them to the rates of the usual Maxwell-Boltzmann approach of many collisional-radiative models. Population calculations show insignificant differences to calculations assuming nondegenerate free electrons of plasmas at solid density close to local thermodynamic equilibrium, but show departures in ave...
